How i cracked anatomy in dental school

I joined the dental institute with the hopes and dreams of achieving the goals I’ve set for my future. But it became questionable as soon as I tackled anatomy and the cadaver in the dissection hall, which was a huge barrier to my vision—in my point of view, I saw nothing but different colored noodles with different names and different functions. Everything was confusing at first until I cracked the code to learn it easily. Let me share my experience.

Diagrams!

Diagrams are your best friends. You don’t have to be an artist. Simplifying complex diagrams into flow charts could also be helpful.

Allotting a separate notebook for such diagrams and studying the concepts through these diagrams could be a game changer. Being able to visualize these diagrams, creating a 3D image within your mind, could help simplify complete anatomy in a nutshell.

Ask questions

In medical school, no question is a silly question. To better understand the structure, ask questions like:

  1. Where is it located?

  2. What is its course?

  3. What are the contents in that region?

  4. What could happen if it’s damaged?

  5. How is it relevant in dentistry?

Choose the right books

  • Primary book: BDC / Vishram Singh (stick to one)

  • Atlas: Netter’s or Grant’s (non-negotiable)

  • Dissection manual: For practical understanding

Correlate clinically

Visualize these structures in the dissection lab. Trace them with your hands. This helps your brain map those structures in a 3D field. When you approach clinically, this could help you in numerous ways.

Focus on Dental Relevance

As a dental student, you don’t need the same depth as MBBS students in every area.

Pay special attention to:

  • Head & neck

  • Cranial nerves

  • Muscles of mastication

  • Blood supply & nerve supply of face and oral cavity

This will help not just in exams, but also in clinics and oral surgery later.

Revise!

Anatomy is quite a volatile topic which requires constant revision to retain the knowledge for a longer period of time. Even 30–45 minutes daily can make a huge difference.
